Matter week was AMAZING! For this week we did all matter, all the time! Even our Team Literacy time was devoted to books about matter. We learned many new vocabulary words, did tons of experiments, watched videos, read books, and celebrated the end of our learning with root beer floats. The coolest part was our matter journals. Mr. Schreurs and I put together a book with all of the vocabulary and experiments we would be doing throughout the week. It was the students' job to enter all of the information they learned through pictures, videos, recordings, and typing. I have never seen the students so interactive and reflective with their learning, it was amazing to watch. When the books were complete this afternoon, we turned them into videos and uploaded them to our digital portfolios. It will be fun to watch them at Portfolio Day later in the year! I was very proud of the work everyone did and I know they enjoyed the week very much.
When we get back from break we will be very busy. We are getting ready for new word study groups. This change will happen right away on the Monday we get back. Some students will be reviewing sorts they have already done that they still need to work on, while others will continue on where they were. Either way, we are making sure we are meeting every student's word study needs. Please do not worry if your child repeats sorts.
We will be starting chapter 12 in math. The past couple weeks we were working on graphing, which was a lot of fun. Now we will be working on numbers to 40, which is a pretty short chapter, and then moving into addition and subtraction.
Our review writing is now over, although it was really great. The next unit is writing nonfiction chapter books. I'm looking forward to starting this unit with them!
And we will be returning to life cycles in science and studying the praying mantis and butterflies in the classroom.
We will also be continuing to work on our digital citizenship, as well as our social emotional learning program.
Things to ask your child about:
-What are the three states of matter?
-What was your favorite experiment we did this week?
-How long did it take your group to melt your ice cube?
Things to remember:
-If you have not given your date preference for the parent pajama party, please do so soon. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem like one date works best for most people, so we will just have to pick one and hopefully as many of you as possible can come. You can also see if any other grandparent, aunt, uncle, babysitter, etc. can come. Here is the link again:
