We have had a lot of exciting things happening the past few weeks. We've been studying the butterfly, frog, and plant life cycles. We had painted lady caterpillars that we watched grow into adult butterflies. We let them go about a week ago. We also tried our best to grow some plants. At first they seemed like they would grow well, but as time went on, they didn't seem to like our classroom too much. Our praying mantis egg case opened and many came out. We are going to learn about their life cycle next. They are exciting to watch! We also had Randy Korb come and do a frog and butterfly presentation for our class. Check out the pictures of our students holding frogs and butterflies!
Thanks again to everyone who came to Portfolio Day. It was so nice to see how happy and excited the students were to show their families their work. They've been working hard all year and I'm glad they had a chance to show it off!
During writer's workshop the students have been writing opinion papers. They are picking topics based on collections they have or other things they care about. They either had to write reasons why they like or don't like the topic. I am very impressed with how quickly they were able to write these papers successfully and how many details and reasons they have been giving.
It is hard to believe we are down to the last month of first grade. We are going to be busy the next few weeks making the most of our time together.
A huge THANK YOU again to all of you for making my teacher appreciation week special. I appreciate the cards, gifts, and treats very much!
The last week of school will be a special one. I will send home a note and email with specific details about what will be happening that week soon.
Things to ask your child about:
-What are the stages in the plant, frog, and butterfly life cycle?
-How do you subtract with regrouping?
-What opinion papers have you written?
Things to remember:
-If you have not paid for the Peter and the Wolf field trip Tuesday, please pay as soon as possible so your child can come!
-Next week is the last week students can check out books at the library. Please help your children remember to return their books so they can participate in the last checkout of the year.
