It was another busy week in Room 28. This week we spent some time learning new reading strategies. The students are tuning into interesting words, cross checking, and using the pictures to help them understand the words. This week we also had a lesson on picking good fit books. We compared it to picking out shoes. Each person wears a different size shoe and there are different shoes we wear for different occasions. Books are the same way. We have different levels that are right for us, but we are all still growing as readers.
We also reviewed some math skills this week using games and centers. We rolled dice and tallied our results, made patterns out of blocks, created designs out of shapes, and compared numbers. We've also started our calendar time, which reviews the date, weather, patterns, time, and money.
Here are some things you can ask your children about:
-What is a bucket filler?
-What is the I PICK rap?
-What is the first way to read a book?
-What are some interesting words you tuned into this week?
Things to remember:
-Scholastic Book Orders are up and ready for you! Go to scholastic.com and put in our class code:GR4KW. The catalogues just arrived today, so I will send those home at the beginning of next week. Remember, the more books you order for your children, the more books I can order for the classroom library!
-We still need volunteers for our September field trip to Rivershire! Please let me know if you can join us on the 20th.
-If you have not sent in your child's art smock, coins, or all about me posters, please send them on Tuesday, Sept. 4.
-Our class goes to the library on Fridays. Please try to remind your child to bring back their books each week so they can check out new ones.
-Don't forget to check out the picture albums to see your kids hard at work!
Thanks:
-Thank you to everyone who was able to come to Curriculum Night. It was a pleasure meeting you and I am excited to work with you and your children this year. I will try to give everyone a call next week to check in with you.
Have a wonderful long weekend!
