This past week we continued our social studies unit learning about maps. Individually students created a map of our classroom, including a compass rose and key in their model. For homework your child brought home directions for creating a map of their bedroom. I am very excited to see their maps on Monday!
We completed chapter 4 in math and started our next chapter focusing on geometry. During this chapter students will gain lots of hands on experience with plane and 3 dimensional shapes. Students will also be practicing fact fluency in preparation for the next few chapters in our math curriculum.
In writers workshop students were matched with a classmate, their writing partner. This partnership provides students extra support when developing their stories. Partners plan and revise their pieces together. It amazing to see the progress students have made in their writing over just a few weeks!
Team spelling and team literacy continue to provide students differentiated instruction that is at a “just right” level. During literacy choices, Mr. Schreurs and I began meeting in small, differentiated guided reading groups. These groups focus on developing reading strategies and gaining fluency and comprehension skills.
Questions to ask your child:
Can you sort your spelling words and read them to me?
What personal narrative did you work on today?
What is the difference between a square and rectangle?
Can you read me your book from Team literature?
Reminders:
-Every week students bring home their spelling sort, I strongly encourage you to have them complete the sort and practice spelling the words. There is a link to Spelling City on the student links page of Mrs. Schlan’ website. Spelling city has lots of fun games to practice their words.
-This Friday November 1st Sprague School will be celebrating Halloween at the end of the school day. I will be sending home more details about the parade and classroom party.
-Please be sure your child is returning their Team literature books to school!
