A lot of this week was spent researching bats, which tied in well for Halloween! The students learned how to pick important facts from nonfiction books. We worked on creating a web of facts related to bats. Now, we are writing our own nonfiction bat books with all of the facts that we learned. We focused on just writing the main ideas on the web, not complete sentences. It was amazing how many facts they remembered just from writing down a phrase like "live in many places." We also discussed the differences between facts and opinions and pointed them out as we were reading and writing throughout the week.
In math, we are continuing our unit on patterns. The students in my math class also made haunted fact family houses this week on Halloween. They sure look spooky! We will be working on our patterning unit through the rest of November, as well as pre-assessing unit 4.
This week we also reviewed bucket filling and bucket dipping, our school-wide behavior system. Please ask your children how they were able to fill someone's bucket at school last week and what they can do to fill buckets this coming week.
The students also learned two reading strategies this week. One is "chunky monkey" and the other is "through kangaroo." Both help the students look for smaller parts or words in longer words. Have your child demonstrate these strategies to you while reading at home.
Here are some things to ask your child about:
-What is the difference between a fact and an opinion?
-What are the strategies "chunky monkey" and "through kangaroo?"
-How can you fill someone's bucket this week?
Thank you to James' mom for being a mystery reader this week!
Thank you to everyone who ordered books from the Scholastic book club! The books have been ordered and should arrive either next week or the following week.
Reminders:
-Please sign up for conferences! I am excited to meet with all of you to discuss your children!
-Contact me if you would like to be a mystery reader.
