The last trimester is all about nonfiction. Not only are we reading nonfiction books and learning nonfiction features, but we are writing our own nonfiction chapter books! It is a very exciting writing unit. We look at mentor texts to show us what to include in our books. Our books will have a title, table of contents, headings, bold words, diagrams, a glossary, and more! The best part is that the students are picking topics they are interested in and know a lot about. So far, we have worked on getting our chapters organized and written our introduction chapters. I am so excited to learn about many new topics through these books! We also have a huge lifecycle unit happening at the same time. We have three different types of caterpillars in our classroom right now, one is already in it's chrysalis stage! We are observing the caterpillars each day to watch them change and grow. We also have two praying mantis egg cases in our classroom, so hopefully we will see some soon. April is also poetry month. We have done several poetry projects, which were a lot of fun. We are also learning about different types of poetry and having some creative time to try out writing these types on our own. We have some great poets in our class! To go along with our poetry unit, we read a chapter book read aloud called Beans on the Roof. It was a lot of fun to read and very motivating! We've also started our safety unit in the Second Step program. So far we did lesson one, which focused on never never rules and ways to stay safe.
Things to ask your child about:
-What types of poems have you been writing?
-What are the stages a butterfly goes through?
-What is your topic for your first nonfiction book you are writing in writer's workshop?
Things to Remember:
-Please sign up for the Rivershire trip coming up on Tuesday, April 28
-Don't forget about the parent pajama party on April 23 from 1:30-2:30. Please let me know if no one from your family is able to come. Looking forward to it!
-The Diabetes walk is April 24.
-I look forward to walking in the D103 walk with anyone who is available on May 16!
-Please continue to send in empty food boxes. We will use them for a project when we are all together on April 23rd. The ones we've gotten so far are great, but the more, the better :)
