This week our class focused on observing and studying the life cycle of a pumpkin. Outside in Sprague’s courtyard we observed and photographed four stages of the life cycle: flower, baby pumpkin, growing pumpkin and full-grown pumpkin. We created both paper and digital illustrations of the life cycle. Throughout the week, using read alouds and quality videos we reinforced the concept of life cycles and how plants grow. The students showed lots of enthusiasm and excitement throughout the unit, especially when they developed the digital life cycle on the iPad using PicCollage.
Team spelling was introduced on Monday, students traveled to different classrooms to work on words selected for their needs. Each week students will be introduced to a new group of words and study them during literacy centers. Students continued to work independently during literacy choices as I started to pull groups for guided reading. In math we finished Chapter 3 and began Chapter 4, which focuses on subtraction strategies. We will continue working on Chapter 4 for the next couple of weeks.
I am very excited about the coming week; Mr. Schreurs and I will be introducing two new activities to the schedule. Writers Workshop will begin on Monday and continue for the rest of the year. It focuses on teaching students how to develop writing skills through different units of study. The first unit focuses on creating personal narratives. On Tuesday our classes will begin Team Literacy, its purpose is to teach students how to become better readers and writers through small group instruction. I am very happy with how the first week went and all the learning we were able to accomplish!
Questions to ask your child:
What are the stages of a pumpkin’s life cycle?
What does “less than” mean?
Can you show me your new word sort?
Reminders:
-No School on Friday October 11.
-No School on Monday October 14.
