Well, between winter break, cold days, holidays, and being in meetings, I feel like I haven't been with the students much the last month. But hopefully that will all change in February! We have been able to squeeze in some good work while we've been at school. The students are finishing up our sun, moon, and earth science unit. They've been learning facts through books, online resources, and projects. They've also been reflecting on what they've learned through their blogger on their iPads. We've also finished up unit 7 in math and are now starting unit 8, which is addition and subtraction facts to 20. If your child is still having trouble with addition facts up to 10, this is the time to use those flashcards we sent home right before winter break! The math concepts get a big more challenging from this point forward. In literacy we are working on making connections. A couple weeks ago we learned about making good text to self connections and now we are working on making text to text connections. We have taken a break from writer's workshop to get our science unit done, but we are going to be getting into that starting next week. The project the students did on the iPads at home is the beginning lesson for their writer's workshop unit on opinion writing. I love this unit and am excited to get started. We also recently finished our wants and needs unit and went to the Raupp Museum. This was a great unit and the students seem to really understand the difference. And we have been continuing our social emotional units to learn how to help people when we can tell by their faces or bodies that they need it. And our digital citizenship lessons to continue working safely on our electronic devices.
Things to ask your children about:
-What are the number combinations up to 10? (2+8, etc.)
-What are examples of wants and needs?
-What are some facts you've learned about the sun? The moon?
Things to remember:
-Great America logs will be due in February. As your child finishes them, make sure they turn them in to me. I don't want any sad children when they are given out in the spring, so even if your child is hesitant about going now, turn it in anyway and then they can have the choice later. If you need a new log, let me know!
-We are still getting mystery reader requests, which is wonderful! If you are interested in being a mystery reader, please email me and we will set up a time.
-Please fill out the iPad feedback survey I sent you so I know how it went sending them home. Don't forget to send the iPads back to school tomorrow!
