Today we finished reading James and the Giant Peach. This story was a blast to read to the students. Everyday we looked forward to seeing what would happen next on James' adventure right when we got back from recess. To celebrate ending the book, we all had a chance to draw and write about what we felt was the most vivid part of the story. I would love to be able to show the movie to the class so we can discuss the differences between the book and the movie. I will be sending home a permission slip because the movie is rated PG. I have been watching the movie and so far I believe everything is appropriate, but once I finish it, I will send home forms to sign if I feel the students can watch it. In writing we started our prewriting for our personal narratives. The students made lists of their small moment ideas and started putting the parts of their stories into a graphic organizer. We are emphasizing how important it is to tell your story to others to make it better. We will be continuing to work on these stories next week. In math we will be finishing up our place value unit next week. We are also continuing our word study groups. Please make sure your child shows you their new words for the week on Mondays. They should be coming home with a paper of their words to sort. They can practice word study activities at home. The students are given a check-in on Fridays to see if they understand the word pattern and know how to spell the words they had for the week.
This was also an exciting week because it was the 100th day of school! To celebrate we did special math activities, read 100th day read aloud books, and wrote about what we would be like when we are 100 years old. We had a lot of fun, it was a great day!
Thanks to Claire's mom for being a mystery reader!
Here are some things to ask your child about:
-What do you think you will be like when you are 100 years old?
-What is the story you are going to tell in writer's workshop?
-What was the part of James and the Giant Peach that gave you the best mental image?
Reminders:
-If we can get enough parent volunteers, we are supposed to go to Rivershire on Tuesday, Feb. 12. PLEASE let me know if you can come on the trip. If we are able to go, make sure your child has boots and snow pants at school that day because we will be wearing them on the trip.
-If you have not turned in your Read Across America log, I need them in as soon as possible. The deadline already passed and I will be entering the logs in on the computer next week.
-Please remember to purchase Scholastic Book Order books! I will be submit the order on February 15. This is how I am able to get new books for the classroom library, so I appreciate your purchases (and so do the students!)
-Valentine's Day is February 14th. I sent home an email and a letter with our Valentine's Day plans. Please ask if you have any questions about the day.
