This week the students learned two new accuracy reading strategies. One of them is through kangaroo and the other is eagle eye. We read a neat book called Mouse's Hide and Seek to learn how to use these strategies. We also continued to practice "read to someone." When the students are reading with a partner, they use their strategy cards to help each other figure out words they don't know. They also use a check for understanding card to remind them to tell each other what they heard them read. Pretty soon our literacy centers will be up and running! The students got a September journal to work on during their literacy time, as well. There are many topics they can choose from to write about. This is separate from writer's workshop, which is a more structured writing time. We also went to Rivershire this week. A huge THANK YOU to all of our parent volunteers! It was so nice to see so many of you at a special activity with your kids. The students were able to explore the forest and learn about habitat trees.
Things to ask your children about:
-How do we use through kangaroo and eagle eye while we're reading?
-What did you write about in your September journal so far?
-How old was the tree you measured at Rivershire?
Things to remember:
--The green book bags that have been coming home must come back to school each day, even if the student has chosen a long book to read. We need to get in the habit of bringing these everyday. We have new strategy cards to put in next week and when we start Team Literacy they will need to be coming back to school or the students will not get to bring home books. Thanks for your help!
-You can use spelling city at home with your child. Next week I will be adding the new sorts they are working on.
-We've had to hold off with Raz Kids for a little bit because the app is not on the student ipads right now. I need to teach the program to all of the students before I send home their logins, so it could still be a little while, sorry! I know the school is working on it.
-We are also going to be getting logins for another reading website called storia. This is the new storia from scholastic. I am hoping to teach the students about this website and give them the logins next week.
