We've had a fun couple of weeks in Room 28. We had a great Valentine's Day. We did some special Valentine activities throughout the day. One activity we did was matching sides of hearts to make compound words. In the afternoon, we decorated bags for our Valentines. Then, we passed out Valentine cards and treats to students in both classes. The students had a blast and it was so exciting to get twice as many cards from our friends!
We've been working really hard on our writer's workshop unit. We read several small moment stories this week. One story we read was called Shortcut and another was called Fireflies. Both of these stories were models to show all of the features of great personal narratives. The students have been working with a partner to tell their own stories. They've been filling out a graphic organizer and then finally writing their story into a book. We will continue working on making our stories interesting and detailed.
In math we finished up our place value unit and are now working on math fact strategies. This unit will give the students different strategies to solve addition and subtraction problems. We will also be continuing to work on problem solving.
Last week we also went on our trip to Rivershire. I will be posting pictures from the trip. It was very slippery, but the students had a great time outside searching for galls. Ask the students how many larvae there were inside their galls!
Thank you to all of the parents who came on our Rivershire trip! We couldn't have gone without you and the students loved having you there!
Thank you to everyone who ordered Scholastic books. I ordered them and they should be arriving soon.
Thank you to Sophia's mom for being a mystery reader!
Things to ask your child about:
-What were some compound words you found in the Valentine's Day activity?
-How many larvae were in your galls from Rivershire?
-What is your small moment story you are writing in writer's workshop?
Reminders:
We need your permission to show the students James and the Giant Peach. I know many of them have already seen the movie, but we still need the permission slip back from everyone. If you have not turned it in yet, please get it turned in on Monday so we can plan the date to show it.
Online conference registration is coming up this week. Don't forget to sign up for a time. I am looking forward to meeting with all of you again!
