This week we visited our outdoor classroom at Rivershire. Students worked in small groups observing habitat trees and measuring trunks to find the trees age. Thank you to all the parents that came and lead the students in their small groups. We had a great time! Students also spent some time observing the pumpkins in Sprague School's courtyard. We focused on the different stages of the pumpkin life cycle and will continue learning about them this week. In math working in small groups students focused on adding by counting on to the larger number. We also focused on telling addition stories based on pictures and small manipulatives. This week we will finish chapter 3 and start chapter 4 which focuses on subtraction strategies. Students continued to show their stamina during literacy centers and began meeting for small guided reading groups.
This upcoming week students will start meeting in word study groups, which have been designed to fit each students needs. We will begin writers workshop later in the week. Writers workshop will continue throughout the year and it focuses on explicitly teaching writing strategies. I am very excited to be starting these new learning opportunities in the classroom!
Things to ask your child about:
-What words are you studying this week? Can you show me how to sort them?
-What is the life cycle of a pumpkin?
