We spent a lot of time building our independent reading and math game stamina this week. Hopefully your children have been telling you about it! Not only are we building stamina, but we are practicing our reading and math strategies at the same time. Take time to look at the reading cards in your child's take home folder and ask them to demonstrate them for you. We've also been working hard in our poetry notebooks. We are focusing on word wall words by highlighting them in our poems and practicing our fluency by rereading the poems. We also introduced "expanding our vocabulary" this week by reading the book Max's Words. We tuned into interesting words while we read the story and shared them with each other. In math we have started working on chapter two and will continue working on it next week. Number bonds were introduced. We also worked with special balances that helped us see what numbers add up to equal other numbers. We also started switching teachers for math, so some students might be in my room and others are across the hall with Mr. Schreurs. This is flexible grouping so we can work with every child in the best setting for them. The students will all be getting the same instruction, we just focus at their pace and comfort level with the material.
A Few things:
-It was such a pleasure to meet with you at Curriculum Night! Thanks again for coming. I am looking forward to working with you and your children very much this year and please let me know if you need anything.
-Today I sent home a reading stamina chart. Ask your children how it works so you can time them building their stamina while independent reading!
-Mr. Schreurs and I are getting ready to start having volunteers during our math time. We do math from 9:20-10:20 everyday. Mondays will be a little different once we begin our TEAM word study. Please email me and let me know if you are available during that time to help out in our classrooms!
-I am ordering the Scholastic book orders this weekend. Thanks to everyone who ordered! There will be more opportunities throughout the year. The books should arrive in the next week or two. I will also be getting lots of new books for our classroom library for the students to share.
-I have been sending the students home with a book from the classroom library to read on the weekends. Please send this book back on Mondays so other students have a chance to read them. Once TEAM literacy starts, they will be bringing home books about every other day to read.
Things to ask your child about:
-How do number bonds work?
-Show me how to use the strategy cards while reading this weekend.
-What have some of the poems been about?
Reminders:
-If you have not turned in your Rivershire forms or handbook letters, please get those back to school as soon as possible.
-If you would like to sign up for a mystery reader time and didn't sign the sheet at curriculum night, just send me an email and we will get you signed up.
-Library books are due on Fridays so the students can check out new books. We didn't have checkout today, but normally we will continue going to the library and checking out new books every Friday.
