I wanted to thank everyone for coming to curriculum night last night. It was so nice to see everyone and I'm SO happy to hear how enthusiastic your children are about first grade so far! Routines are still being set up and assessments still need to get done, but we are on our way to having an amazing year of learning. This week the students started building their independent reading stamina. We created an anchor chart so the students know what their jobs are while independent reading. Our goal is to be able to read for 15-20 minutes straight. During this time, the students are practicing their reading strategies and using the three ways to read a book. We have also been continuing to learn about the students in our class from their All About Me posters and writing books for each other. And we are finishing up our first math chapter early next week. Next week our goal is to get the flexible math groups going so that your child will be learning things at an appropriate pace for them.
Things to ask your children about:
-What does it mean to build our reading stamina?
-Show me what more, fewer, and the same look like.
-What did you share about your stuffed animal in your pic collage?
Things to remember:
-I will submit the scholastic book orders on September 19. If you lose the sheet with the classroom code, it's on the home page of the classroom website. Remember, every time you order books it gives me points to buy books for our classroom library!
-library books are due on Thursdays. This coming week there will be testing in the library, so there won't be checkout.
-I made a Rivershire sign up googledoc and sent it to everyone. I have had a few parents sign up already, which is great! Remember, we need at least five parents to come.
-I wasn't sure who took the forms that were given to me to hand out right before curriculum night, so I sent home copies to everyone again. If you already took them, just recycle the ones I sent home.
-I sent home picture day forms, so send those back in as soon as you can.
-If you'd like to be a mystery reader, I try to sign one up every week or two. Just send me an email and we will find a time that works for both of our schedules.
-I updated the iPad blog and September photos, so take a look.
