The last couple weeks we've been writing all of our small moment stories in writer's workshop. The students' stories have improved so much in such a short amount of time. They are now learning how to add dialogue to bring their stories to life. I am so proud of their progress and can't wait to continue reading their personal narratives. To go along with these personal narratives, we have been spending our read aloud time reading books that are personal narratives. We read several small moment picture books and now we just started a new chapter book called The Stories Julian Tells. Everyone has been enjoying these books and making good connections to their own writing. In our Team Literacy time, students are working on a variety of things. Some students are focusing on fluency strategies while others are working on comprehension strategies. Some students are also working on creating thick discussion questions. They also have a chance to work on responding to their reading through writing and working on word study patterns during this time. In math, we are working on a quick unit to practice math fact strategies and will be moving into a geometry unit after we are done. We are going to be starting a science unit on solids and liquids soon, so that is something for the students to look forward to. The student also attended a storyteller assembly last week, which they really enjoyed.
This week I was fortunate and got to attend the ICE Conference, which is the big Illinois technology conference. I went to a lot of great sessions and look forward to trying some new things with the class.
Things to ask your child about:
-What dialogue did they add to their writer's workshop stories?
-What was their favorite part of The Stories Julian Tells?
-What are you reading in Team Literacy?
Reminders:
-Conference scheduling is up! If you have not signed up yet, please do as soon as possible. I am excited to meet with all of you again!
