Well, we just finished up our first full week of first grade, and it was a busy one! We continued to get to know our classmates by creating books on our iPads using the app Book Creator. I will begin an iPad blog on the website as soon as I can. The students had a lot of fun asking their friends interesting things about them and taking their pictures to add to their books. We've also begun writing books about each of our classmates. Students are sharing their All About Me posters each day and the students are each writing a page about them to add to that child's book. In a few weeks, every student should have brought home a book written all about them! We had our first social studies lesson where we talked about cooperation and getting along. We also went "book shopping" for the first time, where students find books that are a good fit for them in the classroom library. We will be able to better find just right books for them after I complete the beginning of the year assessments and have a chance to read with each child individually. This week we also started working on the first couple lessons in our math book. The students practiced their handwriting a little bit using an app called Absolute Board. We will continue this for the next couple weeks, as well. As you can see, we've had a lot going on in Room 34!
Things to ask your children about:
-What was the billy goat story about that we read in social studies?
-What are the three ways to read a book?
-Can you sing me the IPICK song?
Things to remember:
-We have library on Thursdays. Please have your child bring their books back by each Thursday so they can check out new books.
-Curriculum Night is September 4. The teachers will be giving a whole group presentation first and then we will be giving an iPad presentation right after. When that is over, we will come back to the room so I can tell you a few more specific things to our room. I will see you then!
-I will be sending out an email or putting out a sign up sheet for our first Rivershire trip on September 19.
-I will also put out a sign up sheet for mystery readers at curriculum night, but you can also email me if there are particular times you'd like to come.
