This week we have been working on our measurement unit in math. The students in my math class created a measurement collage using the iPads. Everyone was working on reading a thermometer and using a ruler. We will continue the measurement unit next week.
Our reading lessons were focused on asking questions. We read the book All I See and the students did an excellent job of asking meaningful questions before, during, and after the story. Asking questions while reading is a comprehension strategy we will continue to practice to keep them thinking while reading stories. We focused on the 5 W words (who, what, where, when, why) this week while reading a poem, as well. I posted some pictures of our CAFE board so you can see all of the reading strategies the students have been practicing. The students are also in new TEAM Literacy groups.
This was our first week switching classrooms for word study, which I explained at conferences. Your child should have come home with a sort that they could practice during the week. We will continue to switch for word study on Mondays and practice during our Daily 5 time throughout the week.
We also began our new social studies unit this week called My School and Community. We discussed the important people in our school and what their jobs are. The students created a list of all the important people that make up our school that they will soon interview to find out more about what they do.
In writer's workshop, the students have had a chance to make several rough drafts of stories about something they know very well. Starting next week, they will be learning more about the next steps to publishing a story. We will be taking one of their stories through the writer's workshop process.
Here are some things to ask your child about:
-Who are some important people in our school and what do they do?
-What were some of the questions you had while listening to the book All I See?
-What objects did you measure this week?
It was a pleasure meeting with all of you at conferences!
Reminders:
-We have a field trip to the Raupp Museum on December 14th.
-The Super Star celebration for filling their fuzzy jar will be Friday, December 7. The students can wear pajamas/robe/slippers (as long as they have gym shoes for PE), bring a favorite stuffed animal, and we will watch a movie in the library in the afternoon.
-Wednesday, December 5 is a half day. School is out at 12:05.
