It's been another great week for the Super Star team! Although it was another short week, we packed in a lot. We went on our first trip to Rivershire, which was a lot of fun. The students were on the lookout for habitat trees. They had a chance to measure around the trees and help calculate how old the trees were. A HUGE thank you to all of our volunteers! This week we also did a project using the book George and Martha. There are a series of George and Martha books and they have several short friendship stories in each one. We did a project where the students created their own stories, similar to one of the stories in George and Martha. In math, we practiced building our stamina playing partner games and doing individual work. Next week is the week we are going to start differentiating for math within Mr. Schreurs and our class. We are going to be doing math in a similar approach to how we teach reading groups. Students will be taught lessons mainly in small groups based on their needs and given practice that is just right for them when they are doing their other activities. We are very excited to get started! As for homework, some nights they will have worksheets if it is something I would really like them to practice. Other nights, they will not and if homework is not sent home, the students can play any of the math games we have sent home that night. If it is not the first time we are sending home a new game, you do not need to send back any note saying how it went, just have them play for practice. As we learn new games during the year, we will send them home. And I will not be returning homework pages after they are turned in anymore. It was confusing the students with what they needed to turn in to me, and since you have already seen it, it is not necessary to send back home with them. In writing, we are finishing up our All About Me posters and then we will get into a writer's workshop. If your student has not yet brought home a book written by the class, we should be finishing the rest this coming week. Our social studies lesson this week was discussing why schools have rules. We read a chapter in our social studies books and the students had a chance to write down the most important rules our school has with a partner from Mr. Schreurs' class.
Here are some things to ask your child about:
-How old was the tree you measured at Rivershire?
-What did you write your George and Martha story about?
-What did you decide were the most important school rules and why do we have them?
-How many minutes have we been able to build our independent reading stamina?
Please check out the rest of the website for updates! I posted new pictures and some extras to take a look at. I will continue to add more as often as I can.
Your book orders have arrived and were taken home by your children. I was able to buy about 25 new books for our classroom library, which I will be showing the students next week. I got some of our favorites (Elephant and Piggy, Biscuit, etc.) so they will be excited! We can do another book order towards the middle of October if I have families that are interested.
Thank you again to the Rivershire volunteers! We had a great trip because of your help!
Reminders:
-As soon as your child has their reading log filled in, send it to school with them to turn in. Starting this coming week, I will be giving out awards and books for students who have read a book, or wrote on the log, everyday.
